Objective
Our objective was to capture the impact of Ovechkin’s pursuit by connecting fans and hockey lovers with the staggering reality of seeing all 895 goals in his march to hockey history. It took Alex Ovechkin 20 seasons of hall of fame caliber scoring to match and surpass Gretzky's seemingly unattainable record, and we wanted to put every goal on screen for viewers to appreciate the magnitude of the accomplishment. But that wasn't enough - we also needed to tell the story of Ovechkin's career, and all the challenges and triumphs that led to this moment.
Strategy & Execution
Our strategy centered on Ovechkin approaching the milestone in real time. This series was edited for a rapid release in the weeks immediately following Ovechkin's 895th goal to take advantage of fan excitement and boost viewing in the time between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. And for the voice of the documentary, we turned to longtime Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati, who's been calling Capitals games for the entirety of Ovechkin's storied career. The production team wove together all the goals with archival material, interviews, and host narration to tell the story of Ovechkin's entire career through his epic goal-scoring ability. From draft night to labor disputes, and from Stanley Cup victory to pandemic shutdowns, the team put storytelling first to provide a complete narrative. To fit all the goals into a limited running time (just a string-out of each goal being scored would take several hours), the team utilized split screens and multi-screen graphics to multiple the number of goals being shown at once. And a goal counter graphic throughout the documentary allowed viewers to follow along as Ovechkin approached the ultimate milestone.
