DoorDash is thrilled to submit our partnership with WNBA phenom and Gen-Z Queen, Paige Bueckers and Playa Society for the "Most Creative Partnership with an Athlete." To celebrate the 2025 WNBA season tip-off, we launched a limited-edition t-shirt, uniquely co-designed by Paige in her role as DoorDash’s WNBA "Creative Director." This initiative moved beyond traditional sponsorship, directly addressing the significant demand for authentic, high-quality merchandise within the passionate WNBA fanbase. By empowering Paige in a true creative capacity and strategically collaborating with Playa Society, we created a culturally relevant product that quickly sold out, generated over 600K social impressions, and powerfully reinforced DoorDash’s commitment to women’s sports, demonstrating an innovative approach to athlete engagement.

How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

This partnership sets new benchmarks in fan engagement by moving beyond transactional endorsements to true athlete co-creation. Appointing Paige Bueckers as DoorDash’s WNBA "Creative Director" demonstrates a model where athletes are not just faces, but integral design partners, leading to deeply authentic products. It champions the strategy of directly addressing unmet fan needs – in this case, the significant demand for more, and better, WNBA merchandise. This work will inspire the industry to embrace cultural alignment over generic branding, proving that listening to and serving specific fan communities, especially in underserved markets like women's sports, yields both profound engagement and commercial success. We've shown how strategic timing, accessibility initiatives like free shipping, and empowering athlete voices can create a powerful blueprint for brands seeking to build genuine, impactful connections.

Objective

Our core objective was to deepen DoorDash’s commitment to providing more merchandise options for WNBA fans and reaching the Gen-Z audience by connecting with fans in a truly authentic and meaningful way. We identified a critical unmet need: while women’s sports merchandise sales are booming, 80% of fans still desire more, indicating a significant "merch gap." Our unique goal was to solve this problem by creating merchandise that was not just branded, but genuinely appreciated by fans. Unlike other leagues, WNBA fans exhibit a powerful affinity for the league itself, trusting partner brands who they see as culturally relevant. This led to the groundbreaking decision to appoint Paige Bueckers as DoorDash’s WNBA "Creative Director," ensuring the product would be infused with an athlete's personal touch and resonate deeply with the league’s passionate community, moving beyond mere endorsement to genuine collaboration.

Strategy & Execution

  We designed this entry with the modern WNBA fan's unique perspective squarely at the forefront. Knowing that WNBA fans value authenticity and cultural alignment, we empowered Paige Bueckers, our WNBA "Creative Director," to co-design the t-shirt. This athlete-led approach, collaborating with Playa Society, a brand known for celebrating women athletes, ensured the design blended her personal style with brand identities, making it inherently authentic and resonant. This included a unique past-meets-future design with nods to Paige’s celebrated fashion sense and personality traits. We strategically launched during WNBA tip-off weekend, capitalizing on heightened fan excitement and conversation. Furthermore, we offered free shipping, funded by DoorDash, to enhance accessibility. Our robust social media strategy, featuring influencer Janae Sims was spread widely by Paige, Playa Society, and DoorDash, directly engaged fans where they consume content, driving traffic and ensuring widespread visibility within the modern digital landscape.
