Los Angeles Chargers Era Game App Takeovers
The 7th Annual Awards
- Best Website or Mobile Experience

ABOUT THIS ENTRY
The Los Angeles Chargers transformed their website and mobile app into fully immersive Era Game experiences, turning everyday digital interactions, from checking tickets to browsing content, into a themed journey. By integrating era-specific design, exclusive merchandise, and interactive gameday elements, fans engaged with the team online as deeply as they did in the stadium.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
Rather than treating the website and app as informational tools, we reimagined them as extensions of the gameday environment. Fans didn’t just attend an era game; they experienced it throughout the week as every digital interaction reinforced the theme and story.
By integrating design, content, commerce, and gameday utilities into a unified experience, we met fans at multiple moments in their journey: purchasing tickets, preparing for the game, and engaging with team content. The addition of exclusive merchandise drops and personalized downloadable assets encouraged active participation rather than passive browsing.
The strong increases in traffic, engagement, and interaction demonstrate that fans responded to a cohesive, story-driven digital environment. The Era Game App Takeovers show how thoughtful digital design can deepen emotional connection, extend gameday beyond the stadium, and elevate everyday platforms into memorable fan experiences.
Objective
Our era games introduced new alternate uniforms while celebrating key chapters of Chargers history, but we saw an opportunity to extend that storytelling beyond the stadium and into the digital fan journey.
The initiative supported one Charger Power game (70s-era all gold uniforms vs. the Colts) and three Super Chargers games honoring the 90s-era navy uniforms — including Thursday Night Football vs. the Vikings, a rivalry matchup against the Raiders, and our Fan Appreciation finale vs. the Texans.
While we had executed app takeovers before, this marked the first time we transformed both the website and mobile app simultaneously into a fully themed experience. Our objective was to immerse fans in the era identity across every touchpoint, turning everyday actions — checking tickets, browsing content, or planning gameday — into part of a connected story.
By blending nostalgia, design, and functionality, we aimed to deepen engagement and make era games feel like full-week experiences rather than single-day events.
Strategy & Execution
We executed full-scale digital takeovers across both Chargers.com and the Chargers mobile app, redesigning core fan touchpoints to reflect each era theme.
On the website, we updated the logo treatment, navigation colors, headers, and all gameday-related pages — including stadium information, mobile ticketing, and game-day guides — ensuring a cohesive themed journey across essential fan utilities.
Within the app, the experience went even deeper. We transformed the app icon, splash screens, homepage, fan profile, schedule page, and gameday sections, introducing custom icons and era-specific design elements throughout. Fans also received downloadable themed wallpapers, allowing them to extend the experience to their own devices.
To further reward engagement, we launched exclusive Super Chargers merchandise drops available only through the app, timed strategically ahead of kickoff to build anticipation and reward loyal users. Every element was designed to make interacting with Chargers digital platforms feel like stepping into the era itself.
