Overtime Elite gets media deal with Amazon Prime Video

In a move that speaks to both the appetite for live programming and the appeal of rising young basketball stars, Overtime Elite has entered an agreement with Amazon Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming service, giving Prime Video exclusive streaming rights in the United States to 20 live games per season for the next three years.

What's the deal?

The companies said that Amazon had also made an investment in Overtime as part of a recent funding round. “It looks a lot like a sports league does,” Dan Porter, chief executive of Overtime, said in an interview ahead of the announcement.

Live sports are “the only thing that holds a linear television bundle together and they’re super valuable,” Porter said. “Look at the success that Amazon is having with ‘Thursday Night Football’ and Apple is going to have with Major League Baseball. I think that that’s the future, and we want to participate in that.”

Amazon, which claims it has more than 200 million subscribers to Amazon Prime, already owns the rights to numerous live sporting events, including in football, baseball, soccer, and tennis, and has signaled interest in the NBA.

Big 12 agrees to new media rights deals with ESPN, Fox

The new deal, negotiated by recently hired commissioner Brett Yormark, will average $380 million per year. An average payout of nearly $31.7 million per school for an expanded 12-member conference represents an increase from the Big 12’s current TV rights revenue – believed to be around $28 million per school – despite the fact that Oklahoma and Texas are departing the conference for the SEC in 2025.

Multiple conference sources said that a pro rata clause is expected to be included in the Big 12's extension with its network partners, which would aid the conference if it pursues additional members. Yormark said in July the Big 12 is "open for business" and exploring its expansion opportunities.

Women athletes now have their own sports network

Finding women’s sports is about to get easier. The first-ever network to focus on female athletes, the Women’s Sports Network, launched Wednesday, offering 24/7 streaming of original programming, competitions, documentaries, and a daily studio show “Game On.”

The Women’s Sports Network has partnerships with the Women’s National Basketball Association, Women’s Football Alliance, Ladies Professional Golf Association, U.S. Ski and Snowboard, and World Surf League, among others. It plans to broadcast games starting in January. Fast Studios was founded in 2020 by long-time ad executive Stuart McLean with a focus on ad-supported streaming television services. Fast Studios has also launched streaming networks focused on auto racing and spartan obstacle course competitions.

Drone Racing League brings on PointsKash as new partner for fans rewards program

Blockchain-based rewards platform PointsKash has signed a five-year deal to support the DRL Flight Club loyalty program in which members can accrue points by purchasing merchandise, registering for races, downloading DRL racing games, and engaging with digital content. Fans will be able to redeem those points for DRL live event access, limited edition apparel, and extra plus-ups within DRL games.

The PointsKash mobile app is set to launch in December. The season-opening Race in the Cloud presented by Google Cloud—which took place earlier this month in Silicon Valley as part of another new partnership for DRL—will premiere on NBC and the league’s digital platforms on Nov. 19.

LeBron James to co-host Prime Video’s ‘Thursday Night Football’ alternate stream

James, Maverick Carter, Paul Rivera, and special guests will join TNF live from The Shop as an alternate stream offering, starting with the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers game Nov. 17. TNF in The Shop will be an unmatched, watch-party-style experience, according to Prime Video.
