An inside look at lesser known collegiate rivalry stories in the NCAA. '30 for 30' meets 'Hardknocks' meets 'Cheer'. These are the stories you haven't heard. In a way, it's primal, like a passionate dislike for a little brother, or even an annoying neighbor. Rivalries in college sports are particularly heated, a usual end-of-season matchup with annual high stakes everyone looks forward to. Sometimes, they offer your team a chance to beat the nearby bully. Other times, it’s equally satisfying to know the team you're rooting for may have just spoiled an adversary's season — quenching the thirst of those who hate. Each episode offers a complete look into the greatest sports rivalry stories in the NCAA.

How does this represent “Excellence in Engagement”?

The partnership between LG & the NCAA goes vastly beyond this original documentary series. Part of the partnership was the development of the NCAA Championships Channel. An original app on the WebOS-based LG Channels featured exclusively on LG Smart TVs. This original content vertical debuted here and is then accessible On-Demand. It's a new way for college sports fans to access news, highlights, information, and original content. A continued partnership between LG and each university thrives after the documentaries are complete. On-campus activations, promotional events, and activities furthering the partnership and connection between fans and sport.

Objective

Our objective was to create original content for LG connecting them to their partnership with the NCAA. The ask was broad and carried many potential paths. Ultimately, we narrowed it down to an original series rooted in authentic storytelling. The idea was to focus on "lesser-known" rivalry stories in the NCAA and stray away from larger college sports stories that have been told for decades. Each story focuses on a different region, with different universities, different sports, and balancing men's and women's athletics. By working with the schools, coaches, athletes, and the communities our goal was to shine a light on these incredible stories giving them a platform when they typically haven't had one. We’ve all heard of the rivalry stories between schools like Duke vs North Carolina or Ohio State vs Michigan, but did you know, that 2 universities in rural South Dakota have had an annual NCAA DII football game fighting over a gold pan trophy for over 150 years? How about the 5 universities sharing 1 single campus in Southern California with one of the most heated tennis rivalries in all of college sports? These are the types of subject matter for each episode of ‘The Rivalries’.

Strategy & Execution

We have been able to embed ourselves with these teams to give an up close and personal story behind each rivalry. Access requires trust and trust comes from our non-biased point of view which we deliver with each episode. An insider look into modern-day college sports with a history lesson built in. Each story reflects the greatness of the student-athlete and the spirit of high-level competition giving the modern sports fan "inside access" to stories they likely have never heard or the real die hard fans a true spotlight on their regional story that the rest of the world has never heard. Our key considerations include the strength of the rivalry story & the historical context within, the diversity of the stories, a gender sports balance, geographic & regional variety, and the community, family, outside perspective & overall involvement. All of these factors come together to tell a complete story.
