ABOUT THIS ENTRY

Take a look at the 2023-24 NFL season, along with other sports captured through the lens of Professional Sports Photographer Travis Ellison as he not only captures high-action, storytelling moments, but also delivers them in a collage format that gives a 3D effect on screen. The images are strategicaly placed to interact with one another and speak to the audience in a compelling manner. His unique style has inspired other indiviual creatives as well as sports media enititees who have now emplimented the style into their work.

How does this represent “Excellence in Engagement”?

Similar to the response above, this takes fan engagement to a new level because it’s been able to present more information in less time to fans. It’s also a refreshed approach to content and gives the fan a unique perspective that they won’t see on the majority of posts. From the creative perspective, this has become a style many photographers and graphic designers have been eager to replicate. As the style continues to grow, we will see more work being featured in this way, allowing photo storytelling to be enhanced on social media.

Objective

The unique objective that led to the creation of this work was the need to tell a more complete photo story within the constraints of Instagram’s largest post dimension ratio (4:5) for carousels. Aside from the 9:16 ratio for reels, the 4:5 ratio has become the standard for posting content that presents best on the Instagram platform and takes up the largest amount of space on mobile phones when scrolling the timeline.

Strategy & Execution

The modern sports fan is constantly consuming content on their mobile device. On game days, even if the game is on the big screen tv, their mobile device is certainly nearby. Creatives in the sports space have started to grow their own following to the point that fans and athletes follow the social media accounts of creatives, to see the game or their favorite athlete captured from the perspective of the sports creatives they follow. Having the ability to capture the game, the fans, and the overall atmosphere of a game day and then intentionally crafting the images together into a 4:5 ratio. The images overlay each other within the frame and each image interacts with the other to tell a more thorough and engaging story that cannot be told from individual images. As fans engage with these images from their mobile devices, the images appear to jump off the screen and even out of the app due to the ability to overlay the images and include a border that matches the app, creating the illusion that the images are outside of the 4:5 frame.
