Caps Red Line: Cap for a Day
The 7th Annual Awards
- Best Engagement for Good
ABOUT THIS ENTRY
Caps Red Line had the opportunity to follow along Kalen Anderson, a 16-year-old cancer survivor and Capitals fan. Make-A-Wish granted Kalen’s dream of getting to be a part of the Washington Capitals, skating along her favorite player T.J. Oshie, and being honored at the annual Hockey Fights Cancer game.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
Kalen’s Make-A-Wish story with the Washington Capitals sets the bar in terms of thinking about the type of content to highlight coming from a professional sports organization. Although the elite athletes are known for their sports skills, they are also role models for the community. It is important to showcase all areas of the players' personalities and interests so as to encourage the next generation of athletes to think beyond the game, and what they want their legacy to be off the ice (or field, or court).
Objective
Caps Red Line gives fans a glimpse at the best on and off the ice stories surrounding the Washington Capitals. CRL gives fans behind-the-scenes access to the players they know and love as they help put some good into the world one wish or act of kindness at a time.
Strategy & Execution
By following Capitals players as they show compassion and go the extra mile to put a smile on their fans’ faces, Caps Red Line humanizes elite professional athletes. This gives fans the opportunity to become more invested in both the players and the causes/organizations that they support. For example, other die-hard T.J. Oshie fans may see his work in helping Kalen with Make-A-Wish and be inspired to donate or get involved. This has a ripple effect outward of positivity and changes for good.
Conversely, those that may have also been affected by cancer or had a Make-A-Wish experience may feel a special connection to a player that helped support an organization close to their heart.
