ABOUT THIS ENTRY
The Washington Capitals' 50th anniversary content takes a heartwarming journey through the franchise's rich history. The content includes archival footage, interviews with alum, and stories never before heard through the team's incredible history.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
The Caps 50th Campaign invites fans to remember their favorite team or to join an incredible fandom. By inviting fans to share their memories we ensured they felt engaged and a part of this exciting campaign. Through interviews with key individuals and archival footage we were able to tell new stories and bring new perspective to the history of the organization.
Objective
The Capitals have an incredible 50 year history - with this content we aimed to introduce new fans to the storied history, and to allow long time fans to relive their best memories with the team. We wanted to find new and creative ways to showcase the team's history and provide new perspectives to that history.
Strategy & Execution
We divided up our history into five key eras and created unique looks representative of each era. The Pioneers, Coming of Age, Dot.Com Era, Rock the Red and the Stanley Cup All Caps era. The goal was to connect our old fans with their memories and teach our newer fans about our history - a history that almost ended in the team folding altogether. It's easy to talk about the Caps now when we have the Ovechkin/Gretzky chase but we wanted to share the story of how we got here. We encouraged players, coaches, management, staff and fans to share personal stories and approached the interviews in a conversational, relaxed way. The result is an all you can eat nostalgia buffet - from the dark days to our glory days.
