- Best Original Film or Series: Long-Form
ABOUT THIS ENTRY
Award winning sports journalist and television personality Rachel Nichols gets behind the scenes access and conducts fascinating in-depth interviews with some of the most dynamic athletes and celebrities in the Washington DC area.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
On a series like Hometown with Rachel Nichols, fans get unique access to their favorite athletes and their favorite teams. After watching an episode of the series, they will feel that they know these players that much more intimately. This will only serve to strengthen their passion for the sport and their teams.
Objective
The objective of the series is to allow fans unprecedented access to these DC area celebrities and athletes and get to know them in a more in-depth way. Every episode features a fun activity that is designed to get the athlete or celebrity out of their comfort zone a bit to show a side of these superstars that the viewers rarely get to see. Rachel has taken her interviewees bowling, they’ve eaten Maryland crabs, and even played virtual golf. Rachel then sits down with the DC area superstars to walk them through their careers and uncover never-revealed stories and anecdotes. The more the viewers get to know these athletes and celebrities, the more they are invested in the success of the teams and their careers. Rachel’s infectious energy brings out a side of her interviewees that is not often seen.
Strategy & Execution
In today’s age of social media platforms and behind the scenes documentaries, modern sports fans not only expect, but demand this kind of unfiltered access to the athletes that they follow. Shining a light of the personalities of the sports stars has become almost as important as their success on the field or the court. As a journalist for multiple decades Rachel Nichols has a special relationship with the athletes she covers. She can draw from her depth of knowledge of the sports themselves and also of the past and present athletes, as she finds unique angles of questioning to bring out and engaging and fascinating interviews.
