- Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging
ABOUT THIS ENTRY
Inside The Camp was a behind the scenes look into U.S. Deaf Women's National Team's camp ahead of their first televised match, a double header with the women's National Team. It also included both captions and American Sign Language for increased accessibility.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
This content was created with accessibility for the deaf community in mind, and our strategy was shaped by input from our deaf athletes while working with them on this project. In order to do create the most accessible piece of content we added two different on-screen elements: captions and an American Sign Language translator.
Objective
The U.S. Deaf Women's National Team, sometimes referred to as the greatest soccer team you've never heard of, is one of the most successful soccer teams in the world. They've won three World Deaf Football Championships and are the four-time Deaflympic gold medalists.
In June of 2024, the U.S. Deaf Women's National Team were scheduled to play their first televised game, a double-header with the U.S. Women's National Team in Colorado.
Inside The Camp was created to highlight Deaf Soccer and the differences, in addition to differences within the Deaf community that players and coahces encounter while playing the sport.
This short-film aimed to educate the broader audience on the Deaf commuity, while also highlighting some of the most successful athletes in soccer.
Strategy & Execution
The modern sports fan wants to understand the culture of the sport beyond the Xs and Os, beyond what happens on the pitch. This series highlights a piece of soccer culture of an under-represented group that isn't often shared. It details the challenges they deal with in training and playing, while building that human connection. The short-film was also crafted to the needs of the deaf community, by incorporating an ASL intepreter in addition to captions. Our deaf athletes shared the different ways deaf people communicate, and to make the video as accessible as possible we had an ASL interpreter on the screen.
