How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

While there has been positive momentum in the past year around women’s sports, specifically women’s basketball, there is still much work to be done. Excluding a few outliers, women in basketball continue to be underrepresented, undervalued and underappreciated within the sports space.

The Players’ Tribune and Haley Jones are doing the work to push women’s basketball forward and create tangible, long-lasting change within the sports industry. Through “Sometimes I Hoop” they are not only giving fans a unique glimpse into women’s basketball and the lives of the athletes who make the game great, they are also proving how consistent investment in the women’s game raises all sports to new heights.

According to Forbes, “Since Jones started her podcast, other former college icons have followed her lead (most notably, Angel Reese). But at the end of the day, Sometimes I Hoop isn’t just a phase for Jones or The Players’ Tribune or a way to get ahead of the curve. For them, the current rise in popularity of women’s basketball isn’t just a fab that will come and go. It is here to stay, and it deserves to be that way.”

Objective

The Players’ Tribune has one mission: empower athletes to tell their stories in their own way. For the past decade, the brand has stayed true to this ethos, becoming the blueprint for athlete-led content & the destination of choice for athletes to share their truest selves. As the brand has evolved, their foundation of trust with the athlete community has never wavered, enabling them to not only grow with the flowing tides of the sports world, but be the force that helps enact needed change.

It makes sense then that the brand would leverage its position in the market to better serve underrepresented sides of the athlete spectrum - specifically collegiate female athletes. With the goal of amplifying the stories of female collegiate athletes, the brand’s first female-led podcast, “Sometimes I Hoop” (SIH) was born.

SIH features current WNBA rookie, Haley Jones, as she sits down with the fiercest women in basketball, both from the collegiate & professional levels, to talk about their lives on & off the court. From their favorite on-the-court moments, to the journeys that brought them to the game they love - SIH provides a platform for talented women who are changing the face of sport.

Strategy & Execution

Modern sports fans have no shortage of sports content to choose from, & 2024 saw a much deserved increase in investment in women’s basketball leading to more & more content being created around the sport. So how does “Sometimes I Hoop” (SIH) compete? By focusing on what TPT does best - authenticity & reachability.

SIH is not a passing fad aimed at capitalizing on the fact that people are finally paying attention to women’s basketball. On the contrary, TPT’s investment in women’s ball has existed long before the ‘24 “gold rush” with SIH being a perfect example of how that investment has come to life.

SIH offers fans something they haven’t had before - an authentic, raw, inside look into women’s collegiate & professional basketball, featuring a host who has made a name for herself in both sectors. This coupled with top-tier special guests like Lauren Betts, Jaylyn Sherrod, Aaliyah Edwards, Te-Hina Paopao & Alissa Pili - SIH is a unique experience for any sports fan.

Additionally, SIH meets fans where they already are through a diverse distribution strategy including all major podcast channels & TPT’s site/YouTube. As well as dynamic ‘social bites’ that are shared across TPT’s social channels reaching over 560K+ followers.
