ABOUT THIS ENTRY

The City Edition court (Boundary Stones 1.0) draws influence from our first Federal Monument to share with a modern audience. Influenced by the life and work of Benjamin Banneker, who broke boundaries hundreds of years ago, the court showcases the Boundary Stones, and the evolution that defines what it means to be in "the DMV"

While the monuments are small in scale compared to those on the mall, they mark a pivotal time in our nation's history.

How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

At face value, the court has aesthetic values that are interesting to casual fans and offer details that link to a pioneer in astronomy, Benjamin Banneker.

The City Edition court is the first court or uniform to use the DMV nickname; something fans in every corner of the region use to describe the area. A shoutout to the area no other major pro team in the market can say was used it on uniform or field. It is juxtaposed against our "Washington" and "the District of Columbia" wordmarks on other uniform to complete the set.

Objective

Building off of the successful debut of the 2023-24 Breaking Boundaries campaign, our goal was to give a new perspective on an historic figure, Benjamin Banneker that connected to the new City Edition uniform, a jersey designed to celebrate the culture and history of our team's home.

At night, when the stars aligned, Benjamin Banneker marked the boundary's original starting point for the Nation's Capital. The original diamond share of the District of Columbia's 10x10 miles is reflected in the design of the top of the monuments, and our vantage point is from the stars we see that shape repeated inside the 3-point arc.

Strategy & Execution

The vertical Wizards wordmark on the baseline of the court is influenced by the engraving on the monuments and is also unique to the Wizards. Teams have traditionally turned their wordmarks on their sides against the baselines. The blackletter wordmark is distinct and looks especially unique on half-court views of the court when watched on a mobile device.

The cherry red lane is a new color to the Wizards court family and took months of preparation and trials. The diamond pattern of the boundary stones seen from the sky were also a unique stain.
