Alex Ovechkin - The GR8 CHASE
Monumental Sports Network and Monumental Sports & Entertainment
The 7th Annual Awards
- Best Athlete Storytelling

ABOUT THIS ENTRY
“THE GR8 CHASE” is a multi-platform storytelling campaign by Monumental Sports & Entertainment and Monumental Sports Network that chronicled Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit of the NHL’s all-time goals record. Through a blend of live coverage, original content, and fan-driven activations, the campaign transformed a historic milestone into a deeply personal, real-time narrative shared across platforms.
How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?
“THE GR8 CHASE” represents excellence in engagement by demonstrating how modern sports media can elevate athlete storytelling into a multi-platform, fan-driven narrative. The coverage reframed Ovechkin’s pursuit of the record as more than a statistical milestone — it became a deeply personal, unfolding story about an athlete’s legacy, perseverance, and impact on the sport.
Rather than relying solely on highlight-driven coverage, Monumental built a storytelling ecosystem that contextualized Ovechkin’s journey across two decades, combining archival storytelling, documentary programming, real-time broadcast coverage, and fan-generated tributes. This approach allowed fans not only to witness history but to understand the human story behind it.
The project sets a new benchmark for athlete storytelling by showing how regional sports networks can uniquely capture the emotional depth of a milestone through proximity to the athlete, the team, and the community. By integrating broadcast, digital platforms, and fan participation, the content turned Ovechkin’s pursuit into a collective storytelling moment shared by millions.
In doing so, THE GR8 CHASE offers a blueprint for the industry: athlete storytelling is most powerful when it blends historic context, real-time narrative, and fan connection — transforming a record chase into a lasting sports story.
Objective
Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) and its TV network, Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) set out to capture the human story behind a once-in-a-generation pursuit as Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin chased the NHL’s all-time goals record. While the milestone was historic, the objective was to go beyond the numbers and tell the personal story of Ovechkin’s two-decade journey — his passion for the game, the moments that shaped his career, and the connection he shares with fans and teammates.
MSE and MNMT aimed to transform “THE GR8 CHASE” into a storytelling platform that allowed fans to experience the pursuit in real time while reflecting on the legacy behind it. The strategy centered on a narrative ecosystem around Ovechkin’s journey, combining live game coverage with original long-form storytelling, behind-the-scenes content, archival footage, and fan-generated tributes that highlighted the emotional and cultural impact of his career.
The goal was to bring fans closer to the athlete behind the record — celebrating Ovechkin not just as a generational scorer, but as a global ambassador for hockey.
Ultimately, the project sought to turn a record chase into a deeply personal sports story — one that allowed fans to witness history while understanding the athlete who made it possible.
Strategy & Execution
GR8 CHASE coverage was designed to reflect how modern sports fans consume content: across live broadcasts, streaming platforms, social media, and interactive digital experiences. As Ovechkin closed in on the record, the network created a 360-degree, multi-platform storytelling ecosystem that allowed fans to follow the journey in real time while also exploring the personal story behind the milestone.
Through MNMT linear broadcasts and direct-to-consumer streaming platform, fans could track Ovechkin’s progress through integrated goal trackers, expanded pre- and postgame programming, and special coverage surrounding nationally televised games.
To deepen engagement, MSE partnered with MNMT to produce original long-form content, including the three-part documentary Alex Ovechkin: Drive to 895, which chronicled key moments in Ovechkin’s career leading up to the record.
Interactive digital activations further connected fans to the moment, including the “GR8 Face Yourself” TikTok filter and a fan submission campaign inviting supporters to share their own tributes to Ovechkin. A dedicated microsite served as a central hub for highlights, milestones, and real-time updates.
By blending broadcast storytelling, digital innovation, and fan participation, Monumental turned Ovechkin’s record chase into a shared experience across platforms.
