ABOUT THIS ENTRY

Major League Baseball’s strategic investment in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) catalyzed a new era for professional softball. Through integrated content, cross-platform storytelling, and amplification across MLB’s digital ecosystem, the partnership accelerated visibility, engaged new audiences, and created a clear pathway from college softball to the professional game -- redefining how women’s sports leagues can launch and scale.

How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

This partnership establishes a new blueprint for how established leagues can grow women’s sports.

Rather than treating AUSL as a sponsorship property, MLB integrated it across its ecosystem -- creating sustained, authentic engagement across multiple audience touchpoints:

  • Scale: MLB platforms introduced AUSL to millions of fans
  • Continuity: Engagement was ongoing -- from Golden Ticket moments to Opening Day to Championship coverage
  • Authenticity: Player-driven storytelling created emotional connection, not just awareness
  • Access: Fans encountered AUSL across content, live events, and media environments

Critically, engagement extended beyond fans:

  • Media discovered AUSL through MLB’s platforms and events
  • Industry stakeholders encountered the league in MLB’s core business environments
  • Athletes gained visibility that accelerated their personal brands

By embedding AUSL into baseball’s infrastructure, MLB helped create a continuous fan journey from college softball to the professional game, demonstrating how intentional integration -- not just promotion -- can drive engagement at scale.

Objective

The AUSL was created to solve one of the biggest structural challenges in women’s sports: the lack of a visible, sustainable professional pathway following college softball.

Despite strong participation and record-breaking NCAA viewership, fans historically lost connection with athletes after graduation.

In May 2025, just days before the AUSL's inaugural Opening Day, Major League Baseball announced a strategic investment in the league, supercharging the league's efforts in every way. The objective was to leverage MLB’s scale, credibility, and media ecosystem to:

  • Expand visibility and accessibility of professional softball
  • Convert college softball fans into professional fans
  • Elevate AUSL athletes into recognizable national figures
  • Build a sustainable fan ecosystem across multiple markets
  • Establish AUSL as the long-term home of elite softball talent

This was not a traditional investment or marketing agreement, but a strategic partnership designed to integrate softball into the broader baseball conversation -- creating continuity between amateur and professional levels and introducing new audiences to the sport.

Strategy & Execution

The AUSL-MLB partnership was designed as a fully integrated ecosystem, spanning media, events, business operations, and content.

MLB embedded AUSL across its entire platform:

  • Event integration: AUSL was activated across MLB’s most visible tentpoles, including All-Star Week, MLB Awards, and the Winter Meetings -- where Montana Fouts’ pitching demonstration brought AUSL directly into the center of baseball’s industry ecosystem
  • Media & distribution: AUSL games aired on MLB Network and MLB.TV (in front of the paywall), with highlights and coverage integrated into MLB’s broader programming
  • Content amplification: MLB.com and MLB social channels featured AUSL highlights, Opening Day coverage, championship moments, and athlete storytelling
  • Business integration: The partnership included collaborative sales and marketing efforts, embedding AUSL into MLB’s commercial ecosystem
  • Cultural integration: AUSL athletes and storylines were woven into MLB narratives, bridging softball and baseball audiences

At the same time, AUSL executed a player-first content strategy -- featuring Olympic athletes, college stars, and personal storytelling -- to create emotional entry points for fans.

The result was a unified system where AUSL was not introduced as new -- but as already belonging.
