ABOUT THIS ENTRY

On August 5, 2025, NESN challenged a century-old standard in Red Sox broadcasting – and industry norm – by delivering the first all-female, full-game telecast in franchise history. Rooted in the Women of NESN (WON) initiative, the broadcast elevated women into every key on-air and behind-the-scenes role – from the first all-female booth to the director’s chair – transforming a long-standing industry inequity into a nationally recognized moment that demonstrated inclusive leadership as a performance-driven approach to premium sports entertainment and meaningful cultural dialogue.

How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

This initiative embodies Excellence in Engagement by transforming inclusion into action and reshaping how fans connect with both the game and voices telling its story. By entrusting women to call and produce a full Red Sox broadcast for the first time, NESN challenged long-standing industry norms while delivering elite commentary and production without compromise. The result was a viewing experience that felt authentic, credible, and culturally resonant – resetting audience expectations and establishing a new benchmark for equity-driven excellence in sports media.

The broadcast worked to move the industry forward by helping to:

  • Grow female representation in leadership roles.
  • Amplify diverse voices that reflect the modern fan base.
  • Showcase the value in investing in professional development pipelines that yield elite-level output and engage fans. By demonstrating investment in female talent, NESN inspires other networks to shift from occasional participation to sustained advocacy.

NESN has paved the way for a more equitable future, proving that when the industry embraces diverse storytellers, it doesn't just fill a "booth gap" – it unlocks a more engaged and inclusive sports culture.

Objective

For more than a century, the Red Sox broadcast booth has been almost exclusively male. Across Major League Baseball, approximately 95% of play-by-play announcers and 93% of color analysts are men, leaving the most visible and influential roles in game coverage largely inaccessible to women. NESN set out to challenge this narrative by leveraging its platform to showcase female talent, expertise, and legitimacy.

The mission was rooted in NESN’s sustained commitment to advancing women through its Women of NESN (WON) initiative – the first RSN-led program designed to build pathways for women to lead, produce, and tell stories across sports media.

The objectives for this work were threefold:

  • Amplify representation and diversify talent: Expand opportunities for women as storytellers, leaders, and decision-makers – roles historically reserved for men – demonstrating that women can lead and produce sports at the highest levels.
  • Live the WON ethos and set the standard: Activate WON beyond internal initiatives, proving that investing in female development and leadership is not a symbolic gesture but a core business strategy capable of delivering premium sports entertainment.
  • Inspire and engage: Spark industry-wide dialogue around representation while inspiring current and future generations of women in sports media.

Strategy & Execution

NESN implemented a "see it to be it" strategy, producing the “Women’s Celebration Game” on August 5, 2025, featuring the first all-female broadcast team and all-female broadcast booth for a complete game in Red Sox history.

  • The program was intentionally structured as a full-game broadcast, not a symbolic segment, to demonstrate that inclusion and excellence can coexist seamlessly.
  • The network created the structure for every key on‑air and behind‑the‑scenes roles to be led by women from its full‑time roster.
    • On-Air Representation: Emmy Award‑winning reporter Alanna Rizzo and Emma Tiedemann called the game in the booth, joined by Kasey Hudson on the sidelines and Natalie Noury and Jen McCaffrey in studio.
    • Behind the scenes: NESN ensured women also directed and produced the coverage, with Amy Kaplan overseeing game production and Anna Gregoire leading the studio. From control room to camera, women shaped every creative and technical decision in real time.
  • WON storytelling was seamlessly woven into the game, showcasing the initiative’s ethos and the talent pipeline behind the broadcast.
  • A targeted media relations campaign amplified the event beyond the regional telecast, transforming it into a national conversation and a widely recognized benchmark for equity in sports media.
