ABOUT THIS ENTRY

Dear Ichiro is a fan-driven tribute by the Seattle Mariners celebrating Ichiro Suzuki’s Hall of Fame induction and number retirement, built entirely from letters, voicemails, photos and videos submitted by fans from around the world. The campaign culminated in a powerful tribute video narrated by fan voices, showcasing how Ichiro’s legacy transcends the game of baseball.

How does this represent "Excellence in Engagement"?

Dear Ichiro showed what’s possible when fans are given a platform to lead the story. By giving fans simple, meaningful ways to participate, we saw deeper engagement, stronger emotional connection and a tribute that felt personal instead of produced. Fans weren’t reacting to a moment we created, they were helping create the moment themselves.

That approach set a new bar for how legacy moments can be handled. Instead of leaning on polished highlights or scripted messaging, we let real voices, emotion and memories drive the work. The result was a campaign that felt honest and communal, not staged, and something fans could see themselves in.

Dear Ichiro shows how powerful it can be when teams let fans take the lead. It’s a reminder that the strongest engagement comes from authentic, relatable content and that one of the best ways to honor an icon can be by listening to the people who were inspired by them. Dear Ichiro displayed how an athlete, team or sport can connect people, create lifelong memories and inspire generations around the globe.

Objective

The objective of Dear Ichiro was to honor Ichiro Suzuki’s once-in-a-generation legacy in a way that felt as personal and far-reaching as his impact on the sport itself. As part of his 2025 induction as the first Japanese-born National Baseball Hall of Famer and the Mariners retirement of his iconic No. 51, we wanted to go one step further than a traditional highlight reel and instead place fans at the center of the story.

Ichiro’s influence transcends statistics. He inspired generations of fans across cultures and continents, reshaped perceptions of what was possible for international players and became a deeply personal figure in the lives of those who watched him play. Our goal was to create a living archive of his legacy, capturing not just what Ichiro did on the field, but what he meant to people off it.

By inviting fans from around the world to share letters, voicemails, photos and videos addressed directly to Ichiro, we aimed to build a story that reflected the reach, authenticity and impact of his legacy, while giving fans a starring role in one of the most meaningful moments in Mariners history.

Strategy & Execution

Instead of telling Ichiro’s story ourselves, we focused on creating a space where fans could tell it for us, in their own words and voices. Beginning in June and running through Ichiro’s Hall of Fame induction in late July, we opened multiple submission channels to allow fans to share their stories in the easiest and most impactful way for them: social and digital prompts directing fans to Mariners.com, a dedicated voicemail line or mailed letters to T-Mobile Park.

Hundreds of letters & photographs were used to build a physical wall that anchors the Dear Ichiro video, narrated entirely by authentic, powerful fan voicemails. As those voices share personal memories, the wall comes together through close-ups of handwriting and photos, with projections of Ichiro’s most iconic moments layered across the texture of fans’ words and handwriting, visually merging his legacy with the people he inspired.

The video debuted across Mariners social platforms alongside follow-up posts spotlighting individual letters, before serving as the show open for Ichiro’s number retirement ceremony that evening. This approach blended digital and live experiences into one collective tribute that could resonate with fans everywhere, from those watching around the world to those inside the ballpark that night.
